Becoming An Ausome Mom to My Ausome Son

As I sit down to share my journey with you, I am filled with a myriad of emotions. The past four years have been a whirlwind of challenges, victories, tears, and joy. You see, my career took an unexpected hiatus—a hiatus born out of love, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to my son.

Four years ago, I found myself navigating uncharted territory as a mother to a preemie son who was exhibiting signs and symptoms of mild autism. His journey was our journey, and every step was filled with uncertainty and hope. Those years weren’t easy; they were filled with sleepless nights, countless appointments, and the constant search for answers.

My son’s struggle to communicate, his frequent meltdowns, and his repetitive behaviors were all part of our daily reality. Yet, amidst the challenges, there was an unbreakable bond—a bond that fueled my determination to do everything in my power to help him thrive.

For four years, my focus shifted from deadlines and client meetings to therapies and interventions. My days were spent tirelessly working to help my son learn to speak, to navigate social situations, and to cope with the overwhelming sensory stimuli that surrounded him.

We embarked on a journey of discovery—a journey that took us from doctor’s offices to therapy rooms, from quiet moments at home to short trips in Baguio to refresh. Together, we explored the world around us, seeking out new experiences and opportunities for growth.

I watched with pride as my son slowly began to find his voice—to express himself in ways he never had before. His meltdowns became less frequent, his stimming less pronounced. Each small victory filled our hearts with hope and renewed determination.

We immersed ourselves in his world, embracing his interests and passions, and celebrating every milestone along the way. From travels to engaging conversations, from enrolling him in a regular school to seeking out behavioral therapy, every decision was made with one goal in mind: to help him reach his full potential.

And now, as I sit here reflecting on the journey we’ve been on, I am filled with gratitude for the progress we’ve made and the lessons we’ve learned along the way. My son may have faced challenges that many could not comprehend, but he has also taught me the true meaning of resilience, patience, and unconditional love.

Today, my son is thriving—he is talkative, expressive, and full of life. His journey is far from over, but with every passing day, he continues to amaze me with his strength and determination.

So, to all the parents out there navigating their own journeys with autism or any other challenge, know that you are not alone. Your love, dedication, and unwavering commitment to your child’s well-being are making a difference, one small step at a time.

P.S.: It is also helps a lot that my husband and two other sons are very supportive of Andrei. This journey has taught us that we have one another to turn to when the going gets tough. We shall prevail in any situation that life throws our way because together, we are tougher.
